A Little Bit of Heaven on Fifth Street
Galt’s newest salon’s motto:
‘Live well, laugh often, love much’

Walking into the recently opened Fifth Street Salon you might feel as though you’ve stepped out of time and into another era. The air is lightly scented with sweet orange infused with jasmine, and the high ceilings and antique beveled glass insets reflect the softened light. Four talented, experienced and innovative women have helped to transform the restored Victorian that once housed the Galt Chamber of Commerce into Galt’s newest, and very classy, beauty salon that also offers massage. When salon owner Lynn Kennedy saw that the building was for rent, she called right away. “It was very meant to be,” said Lynn. “It just fell into place.”
Located one block north of ‘C’ Street at 206 5th Street in what is known as the Brewster House, the house was built in 1870; it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places in Sacramento County. Photographer Misty Bell also shares the building. The list of services includes haircuts for men, women and children, deep conditioning, up-dos, body waves, all color services, and also waxing.
Kennedy had ‘Hands of Light’ therapeutic massage back in 1994 on Lincoln Way. She has been a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) for thirteen years and has provided therapeutic massage, reflexology and Reiki treatments with great success. Kennedy’s specialty is relaxation of body, mind and spirit. She also includes aromatherapy in her sessions. She has a real passion for her trade. “I love my work so much that I’d almost do it for free.” said Kennedy.
Kennedy has a ‘pre-natal’ massage table for pregnant women to be able to lay face-down, normally an impossible feat at any stage of pregnancy.
Hair stylist Tara Messier, who is originally from Colorado, has two children, 9 and 6 years old. Since she was young, styling hair has been her goal. “Always, all my life I have wanted to be a hair stylist,” said Messier. She seems to especially enjoy and attract clients who are also moms, like herself. “Most of my clientele reflect me,” said Messier. “I enjoy my work, it’s my passion.” Clients have followed the women from other locations where they have worked.
"Tara has been my stylist since I moved to Galt and I've been absolutely thrilled with her talents,” said Virginia Hopper, one of Messier’s clients. Hopper also visits Kennedy for a massage on occasion. “Lynn's magic fingers simply take me to another place! The opening of The 5th Street Salon has completely enhanced the whole experience.” continued Hopper. “The charming and serene ambiance is totally welcoming."
Stylist Christina Carter remembers always asking for a ‘Play-Dough’ barber shop when she was a kid, possibly to prepare her for a career as a hair stylist. “You know, the toy where you push the play-dough through and it makes hair come out and you cut and style it,” said Carter. Carter enjoys the social aspects of the job of a hairstylist. “I love the people I work with,” said Carter. “I also enjoy the creative aspects of the job.”
Laura Kennedy, Lynn’s daughter, got her license in cosmetology after graduating from high school. She attended Galt High for part of her schooling. “I was looking for a creative outlet,” said Laura. “It all came pretty naturally for me.”
Fifth Street Salon is an experiential place, as all of the senses are exercised during a visit. “We also offer complimentary high-quality coffee as well as treats exclusively from Sweet Creations Bakery (in ‘Old Town’ Galt),” said Kennedy.
Even wine to sip and snacks to nibble on are offered in the late afternoon/ early evening hours.
“Your environment reflects in your work. It’s so comfortable, friendly and warm,” all four women echoed. “It’s like coming to someone’s beautiful home.”

The Brewster House in Galt sits as a classy reminder of the city's beginnings. Built in 1870 at 206 5th Street, the house was designed by the Sawyer Brothers in the Italianate style, with four-paned windows, tall elegant doors and vaulted ceilings. Though the house is a historical landmark, it's not uninhabited.
These days, several business call the Brewster house their home. One of those businesses fits right in. The Fifth Street Salon has been open since August of 2007, but seems like it has always been a part of the inviting building.
As the steady traffic of Galt's C Street passes throughout the day, many passersby might never consider that such an upscale business sits just a block away.
In fact, on first visit, clients might think they're lost until they see the hanging signs for the businesses in the Brewster House.
Lynn Kennedy, a certified massage therapist, and her daughter Laura, who is a hair stylist, decided they wanted to work together in their own place. The two had worked in another salon and began looking for a place to combine their careers.
When Lynn Kennedy found the Brewster House, she knew it was just right.
"It was perfect for what I wanted to do," Lynn Kennedy said. "We just had to paint two rooms. That was it."
The perfection shows. The reception area is classically decorated and soothing, with a modern touch that leaves the room feeling like it's part of the past, but definitely in the here and now.
Lynn Kennedy's "office," the massage room, is quietly lit. Candles help add to the ambiance, and the massage table waits for the next client.
Across the reception area is the salon, where Laura Kennedy and co-stylists Tara Messier and Christina Carter stay busy throughout the week, turning out well-coiffed clients. Vibrant reds and yellows of the salon are in contrast to the rest of the business surroundings, yet seem to fit right in.
Clients can get their hair colored, cut, styled and permed. Waxing is also available. The only service Fifth Street Salon doesn't offer is nails, due to the strong smell, said Lynn Kennedy.
Fourteen years ago, after Lynn Kennedy had her first massage, she knew that it was what she wanted to do. She went to school, became certified and opened up her first massage business, Hands of Light. The business thrived for four years.
Lynn Kennedy enjoys the relieving art of massage therapy so much that she would "almost do it for free."
A basic cut and style will cost clients $35, and Lynn Kennedy's services are in half-hour increments. Thirty minutes is $35, an hour is $65 and an hour-and-a-half is $90. She gives first-time clients $10 off of an hour massage session.
As clients wait for a massage or for their hair to be sculpted, organic coffee and fresh-baked goodies are available to be enjoyed.
The main goal of the salon is for clients to relax and leave refreshed. The sign on the front counter says it all: "Live well, laugh often, love much."
